Breaking Chains is an interactive exhibit that combines a history of chain gangs with modern dance and embodying the stories of others.

We invite you to experience the lyrically expressive and politically poignant "Rainbow Round My Shoulder" dance of Donald McKayle, listen to work songs, learn movement vocabulary, and develop a new understanding of the history of chain gangs.

This exhibition was created and co-curated by Central Falls High School students in collaboration with the American Dance Legacy Initiative (ADLI) and the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice (CSSJ) of Brown University.

On Friday, May 1st from 3 PM-6 PM there was a meet-the-curators reception with graduate fellow, Jazzmen Lee-Johnson, and the Central Falls High School students.

This exhibition was on view through May 10th at the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9am-4:30pm.
