Ruth J. Simmons Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice

Slavery and Legacy Walking Tour

The Slavery & Legacy Tours examine the history behind Brown University, the State of Rhode Island and their roles in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. The tours help students (K-12 +college) as well as adult groups think critically about the University and state histories.

Dear Community Members,

The Ruth J. Simmons Center for the Study of Slavery & Justice is pleased to lead its Slavery & Legacy Walking Tours for campus and community groups. We ask that all requests are made at least two weeks in advance in order for our team to properly manage the logistics.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you on a tour soon!

Mask wearing protocol

Vaccinated Individuals: Fully vaccinated individuals (14 days past their final dose) will not be required to wear a mask during the walking tours.

Unvaccinated Individuals: Unvaccinated individuals must wear masks during the walking tours.

Optional Mask Wearing: Any member of the community who is not otherwise required to wear a mask can voluntarily choose to wear a mask in any setting at any time and for any reason (including personal and community protection against seasonal flu and colds). This personal choice will be respected. As with vaccination status, no one should ask another individual about their personal choice to wear a mask.

For more information and updates on university COVID-19 policy, please continue to consult Brown’s COVID-19 website.
We appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience as we all grappled with the impact of COVID-19.  Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing you at a Simmons Center event this fall.
